</div>On St. Patty's day my coworker/friend Bre and I got on a plane to Ireland to start a week long vacation to Dublin, Galway, and London. I studied abroad in Dublin as a junior in college and have a few friends living in London so for me it was a bit of a trip down memory lane hanging out with old friends and revisiting favorite bars and restaurants. We had a great time but the copious amount of beer and delicious (but highly unhealthy) food was not great for my training program. Even so I did manage to sneak in some of the best cross-training: biking on Innis Mor which is one of Aran Islands off the coast of Galway. After biking most of the morning we had mile long hike up to Dun Aonghasa, ruins of a fort set on the most amazing cliffs.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After returning to the States on Friday the 25th having had an amazing but not really relaxing vacation, I immediately had to face the longest training run of the season: the 20 miler. The 20 miler is a big deal for the charity runners as pretty much every charity does it on the same day. Everyone get bused out to the official start line in Hopkinton and run the actual first 20 miles of the course. The goal is that you should run the course like it's a dress-rehersal for Marathon Monday. If the weather agrees, you wear what you're going to wear on race day and work out last minute things like how you're going to carry your gels and how to drink water and gatorade without slowing down. We even got to wear our famous purple Team In Training singlet for the first time. The main thing our coaches stressed was DO NOT GET INJURED. If anything is bothering you, you should STOP as we're only three weeks away from the marathon at this point which doesn't leave much time for recovery.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

So I was really sensitive to not screwing up my leg/knee any more than it already was. A couple of weeks before I had managed to complete 15 miles on the day that everyone else completed 18. I wasn't quite ready to jump right from 15 to 20 especially coming off a vacation. My plan was to aim for 16 and see how I felt. I started off the run feeling pretty good. I was a little sore but it seemed to work itself out after the first mile. Then things started to go south (and I don't mean the direction I was running). My shins started to get really sore but since this wasn't where my original injury was I pushed through it. I got to mile 11 and should have probably stopped there but in the back of my mind I kept saying to myself "If I don't keep going and run at least 16 miles, how am I going to jump straight to 26.2 miles?" Between miles 11 and 13 my knee started to hurt again. I decided that it was best that I stop at the half marathon point so I didn't really injure myself. When I started to walk I realized that the damage was already done. I had to get driven back to the Community Center (yet again) and my leg hurt worse than ever.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I noticed during the next few days that the pain in my knee was not the same as the original injury. That pain was mainly soreness on the outside of my knee (i.e. the bones that run down the side of my leg to my ankle that was not supporting my knee). This pain was just under the knee cap. My physical therapist diagnosed it as a strain from my IT band (the muscle the runs along the outside of your thigh) being too tight and pulling the knee outward. After the pain didn't fully subside she finally taped it so that it pulled my knee back inward to balance out the pulling from the IT band. At this point my leg now looks like a badly wrapped birthday present with all the tape and band-aids I had on it. The tape did it's job though and finally I felt some relief. My coaches and physical therapist felt confident that I would be able to run in the marathon if I just rested and let my knee heal as much as possible. Since we were in the taper phase where we scale back our training to make sure we have enough energy for the marathon, this adjustment didn't really affect my planned training. Well here we are, 8 days until Marathon Monday. My leg is still not completely healed (in fact it's probably in worse shape but more about that later) but I'll be out at the start line nonetheless. This week I'm going to try to make up for lost time. I'll tell you about some notable things that have been happening over the past couple of weeks including the cross-training I've been doing in lieu of running during the week, my vacation to Ireland and the UK, and the infamous 20 mile training run. My injury has been frustrating and to be honest just depressing so I've found that my motivation has been dropping over the past couple of weeks. Here's the story on my diagnosis, treatment and where I stand now. <br />

Here's the verdict...<br />

I had my first appointment at Marathon Physical Therapy in Newton on Friday Feb 18th. My physical therapist Erika, and her grad student assistant Kim asked me how I hurt myself, exactly where the pain started and spread to, and my pain level in the days following the injury. They watched me walk and pulled, poked and prodded both my legs and ankles. The thing was that six days after that fateful Saturday, my knee didn't hurt but I knew that a few miles into a run it would flare up again. This made diagnosing the try cause of my injury even more difficult. Finally after examining my ankles for awhile (didn't I say I hurt my knee?), they asked if I had stepped on any uneven surfaces lately (umm...yes, running on snow and ice while dodging cars every weekend). Their diagnosis in layman's terms was that at some point I must have strained or sprained my ankle without realizing it. The ligaments that run from my ankle bones up the sides of my calf and into and around my knee were weak and couldn't fully support my knee which caused the muscles to seize up in excruciating pain after miles of pounding against them.<br />
<br />
My physical therapists taped my ankle to provide the missing support for my knee and they slowly added exercises into my recovery program during each visit. I use a theraband to provide resistance to strengthen my ankle in every direction and do toe curls to pull a hand towel across the floor. I stand on one foot on a pillow to improve my balance and do wall squats to strengthen my calves and hamstrings. <br />

I took a week off from Saturday training and finally on Feb 26th, 16 miles into the Newton Hills and up Heartbreak Hill was on the schedule but I was just supposed to be attempting 4-6 miles (my coach optimistically increased this to 10 so that I could try Heartbreak). The course was icy and uneven yet again and I only made it 3 miles before my knee started to hurt. I tried to let it work its way out for the next mile before we got back to the first water stop at the Community Center but I had to stop and walk the last quarter mile. Another set-back but at least this time I had stopped early enough where I was not nearly in the same amount of pain after the run as the last long run I attempted. <br />
<br />
I was convinced that the uneven surface and cold weather was the real cause of not completing the distance so after continuing my physical therapy exercises I tried running on the treadmill. With my ankle in an extra brace, I did 5 miles straight without any pain in my knee! The only trade-off was the blister I got from my brace cutting into the top of my foot but it was worth it in my book. Yesterday I took this success and actually ran 10 miles with just some soreness from having not run double digits in 4 weeks. I'm still going to be very careful by constantly icing my knee and ankle and continuing to only cross-train during the week but it looks like I'm finally on the mend! Well sort of... The weather was really crappy, the roads were more messy and dangerous than ever, and I had gone out the night before. Had I not agreed to drive three people to training (and was appropriately called "Soccer Mom" for the entire day), I might not have gone. On the bright side...we were running 14 miles today which would be my longest run EVER.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately that would never come to fruition. The route today was out to Wellesley on Rt 16 until we reached the beginning of Wellesley College which is about 2 miles and then back to the Community Center for the first water stop. Then we kept going out towards Newton with a water stop at miles 6.5 and 11.5 and the turnaround water stop planned at Centre St, mile 9.5ish. <br />
<br />
We had a nutrition clinic before the run which was mostly things I had heard before but it was nice to have a refresher. Basically, don't eat crap, eat most of your calories early in the day, and don't eat more than your daily calories. We didn't get on the roads until after 9am which meant that there was a lot more car traffic that when we normally start. You would think that this being the 115th Boston Marathon, the drivers of Wellesley would have gotten used to runners crowding the streets on weekend mornings in January-March. Let's just say I received a lot of angry yells and shaken fists and my middle finger got a great workout. The culmination came when a car door got thrown out at me and quickly took my hand and shoved it back in the drivers face. I think the poor old man was as surprised to see me as I was to see his door coming right for my face.<br />
<br />
The run was going well. I felt strong and not too tired for having run for 2 hours straight. We came to our final water stop at Mile 11.5 and I felt the muscle behind my left knee seize up. In my mind I just kept saying, "This is no big deal, my muscles are just stiffening up because I stopped. Once I start running again it'll loosen up. No big deal. Just run through it." Fast forward a minute when we started running again. I took three steps and "No, no, no. That's not stiffness. Must stop. Must stop." I stayed at the water stop until our volunteer coordinator, Joe, was kind enough to give me a ride back to the Community Center.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">The diagnosis...a slight pull. The treatment...ice bath, more ice on the knee, no yoga or stretching, no running, cross-train, and rest. I took my ice bath, rested, and iced my knee a couple of times. By Tuesday I could go up and down stairs without pain and felt back to normal.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />

That brings us to yesterday. The 15 miler. Another chance to set my PR for distance. After Mile 1 I could feel a very slight pressure on my knee. It wasn't a painful pressure. More a "Hey, Kate. Remember me? You hurt me last week and I'm still here." With each water stop the pressure increased and finally around Mile 8, Liz, one of my running partners, told me I was clearly favoring my other leg and I should stop before I got hurt worse. After walking by myself for 20 minutes a car pulled up and yelled "Kate! Need a ride!" Now, I had never seen this man or car before but he knew my name so going against all women's safety tips I have gotten over the past 23 years I quickly replied, "YES PLEASE!"<br />

The diagnosis...probable tendinitis. The treatment...ice bath, more ice on the knee, no yoga or stretching, no running, cross-train, rest...and make an appointment with a physical therapist. Sitting in the Community center with ice on my knee I got a lot of sympathy from other TNTers who all echoed that it's still early in the season and I've got plenty of time to heal and ramp up for the marathon. I could help but feel so frustrated. I felt so great and strong but my knee just wouldn't let me get past that 13 mile PR. My teammate Brendan gave his own advice...ICE and BEER. I took that advice to heart and prepared this feast for myself when I got home.<br />

My Bar Night at the Lansdowne Pub. I was particularly excited about this fundraiser for a number of reasons. First of all, this was my main fundraising event that I was hoping would put me over my minimum. Second, I love the Lansdowne. It's one of my favorite bars in Boston. It's located right behind the Fenway Park center field bleachers on Lansdowne Street so you really can't get much more quintessentially Boston than that. Also, they always have great live (mainly cover) bands and an energetic fun crowd. Finally, I got a really great response to the fundraiser and knew many of my favorite people would be there from a variety of groups of friends--everyone from college friends, sorority sisters, coworkers, TNT runners, and even broomball teammates.<br />

</tbody></table>To entice my guests I worked out a deal with the Lansdowne to get not only the space but also some free finger food. On top of that I decided to hold a raffle. Now if you remember my story from my bowling tournament, finding raffle prizes can prove a bit tricky. I found that a lot of places say they are willing to donate (and I think they are) but they are horrible about following up which required a lot of time and effort on the fundraiser's part. I started early this time and with a week to go before the fundraiser I was still short on prizes. I contacted my mentor, Aimee and she came through. Her friend Jay offered to donate one of his beautiful photographs at cost (check them out at <a href="http://www.jaypisano.com/">Jaypisano.com</a>), Aimee herself donated candy from Necco where she works for the candy basket on the table above, and she offered to go around to a few restaurants in the South End with me which resulted in a gift certificate to Picco. In end end I lucked out by winning Revolution tickets at my teammate Travis's fundraiser the weekend before and made a couple of successful calls to the places where I white water rafted and skydived the summer before.<br />

</tbody></table> After finally locking down the prizes and then running around like crazy the few hours before picking up the photo from Jay and making the poster to display the prizes, I was finally all set. The event went off without a hitch (aside from some accusations that I didn't mix up the raffle tickets enough) and everyone had a great time. I raised $550 which put me right around my fundraising minimum and although I may have broken my cell phone and left my credit card at the bar, I still say the night was a success! Yesterday was Recommitment. By 5pm, we had to have our official Boston Athletic Association registration for the Boston Marathon into Jillian, the LLS Campaign Coordinator, as well as all of our recommitment paperwork which formally confirmed that we want to continue to train with and raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I was really excited about filling the form out for some reason. Now my name will be official not only with LLS but with the B.A.A. As of the deadline I had...drumroll please...<b style="color: orange;">$2,916</b> in my Paycor account! This excludes the $315 raised from my bowling tournament fundraiser which has not hit my online account yet so I'm actually just $19 shy of my minimum! Who's going to put me over the top? Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. I've really appreciated the support and it has made getting out there in the snow and ice much easier every week.<br />

</div>Now a quick training update. Saturday was our first half marathon run. I ran the Wicked Half Marathon up in Salem, MA in late September so this wasn't quite my longest run but I was especially looking forward to it none the less. I felt like I didn't do my best at the Wicked Half. It was my first real long distance race so I knew I'd be happy just with crossing the finish line and clocking a time. Still, being the competitive person that I am I really wanted to come in in under 2:30. My time was 2:33:57. Moving apartments at the beginning of September and starting a new job cut into my training towards the end and the high that day was 86 degrees. Excuses, excuses I know. Having properly trained this time around I was really excited to see improvement. My time was <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange;"><b>2:07:43</b></span>! That's a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange;">26 minute improvement and a 10:06 min/mile pace!</span> I was blown away! I'm right where I want to be for my stretch goal of coming in under 4:30. <br />

To cap it all off I took my first ice bath to help speed my muscle recovery. I really thought these were an exaggeration in sports movies. Apparently not. I filled the bathtub with cold water and a tray of ice cubes. Let's just say that my roommate Elise had to come check on me after the string of curses that exited my mouth after I put my first foot in the water. She was kind enough to snap this pic of me cringing in pain as I sat my whole body down. I put my iPod on to try to forget about the cold for the 10 minutes I was in there and fittingly the first song that came on was "F**k You" by Cee Lo Green. I just can't wait to do this again next week!<br />

Now that the year-end at work is coming to a close hopefully I'll have more time to post regularly. I figured I'd give a brief update of where I stand on the training and fundraising front.<br />

Luckily, on the training front I can update you pretty easily because all our training has had a general theme...snow (with some sub-freezing temps thrown in there just for fun). I kept up with my long runs over break and our first training run back on January 8th was supposed to be not only our first double digit run but also our first run out towards Newton and the infamous Newton Hills. Due to the snow that was coming down on us that day, we were treated to a shorter 6 mile run towards Hopkinton and an intense cross-training session to make up for the shorter mileage. I'll get into cross-training in another post but let's just say I went to the grocery store the next day and had to strategize how to get a can of beans off the bottom shelf without embarrassing myself next to an elderly woman. <br />
<br />
The following Saturday we finally attacked an 11 miler and the Newton Hills. I felt great through the hills. I took my coach Sarad's advice and hunched over slightly up the hills, not straightening up until I was through the crest of the hill, and only looked a few feet ahead of me and not at the huge incline I still had to defeat. I didn't tighten up until around mile 8 after the third water stop. The killer though was a hill some of the girls in years past had nicknamed "Mildred" which, like Heart Break Hill, comes right near the end of the run, is long and steep, and on this particular morning was covered in snow and slush. I managed to jog the entire way up but I honestly probably could have walked it faster. By the end of the run my legs hurt like they never had before and it took me a full 30 minutes to stretch them out before I felt like I could drive home.<br />
<br />
Finally this past Saturday we went towards Hopkinton again for a 12 mile run. It was bitterly cold at around 15 degrees and with the wind it felt even colder. Our other coach, Kelly, sent around an email before practice reminding us to dress appropriately.<br />
<blockquote><span lang="EN">"<b>10 to 20 degrees:</b></span><span lang="EN"> 2 tops, 2 bottoms. A jacket over your base layer and wind pants over the tights."</span></blockquote>I had on three tops, two bottoms, and a scarf. With all the layers I had on I felt like I had suddenly gained 10 pounds and by the end of the run I really just wanted to pull off and ditch my extra pair of pants and scarf (but didn't because I'm cheap and I paid good money for them). My body temperature must run hot because I clearly didn't need to bundle up so much. As it's been continuously snowing in New England, the sidewalks were not well plowed so we also had to battle cars on Rt 135 pretty much the entire run as we made our way into Natick for the first time. My teammate Manny said that a PeterPan bus driver actually looked him straight in the eye and tried to run him off the road. In my year and a half driving in Massachusetts with Mass drivers, I don't doubt it. Aside from the temperature and traffic issues the run went very well and I finished in about the same time I finished the 11 miler and not nearly as sore and tired. I estimate my pace was about 10:30 min/mile which is great for a long run and right where I want to be.<br />

So what's on the agenda for this week? Recommitment is on <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange;">January 31st</span></b> so we've all been working to get in the last of our donations to reach our fundraising minimum. As of tonight I have <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange;">$2,405</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange;"> </span>in donations! (This includes $300 from my bowling tournament that hasn't hit the account yet) which is <b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange;">74%</span></b> of the way to my goal! This week I've also been preparing for my main fundraiser! I'm having a bar night at the Lansdowne Pub on Saturday just in time for recommitment. I coordinated a bowling tournament at Lucky Strike in Jillian's which is located right behind Fenway Park's center field bleachers.<br />

The initial set-up of the event was a breeze. I called Jillian's up and they quickly agreed to let me use 4 lanes for 2 hours and threw in a plate of chips and salsa for the group. The only catch was that they only times they donated lanes were Monday-Thursday from 6-8pm. Since many of my friends work outside of the city and/or work long hours some nights, it can be difficult to get down to Fenway by 6pm and therefore it was difficult to get people to commit to coming in advance.<br />
<br />
My second challenge was figuring out and obtaining a prize. I contacted a few restaurants and cafes around Boston to ask if they would donate a gift certificate. Most seemed vaguely interested but needed a letter from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society officially endorsing me as their fundraiser...which I didn't have. Because of the holidays I was getting crunched for time so I quickly emailed Jillian at the Massachusetts TNT HQ and voila! I had the letter in about 24 hours. The Improv Asylum in the North End came through and donated six tickets.<br />
<br />
Finally I decided I wanted to make an inexpensive but fun trophy. I really impressed myself with my craftiness on this one. Take a look at the pictures of the trophies below and the pics from the event itself. We ended up having 13 people including myself participate in the event instead of the 20 I was hoping for. Even so, we had a great group come out and everyone had a good time. My co-worker Jess, her boyfriend Chris, and her roommate Sary ended up winning by 5 pins but I bowled the highest score in a game. I think my 150 is a PR! Hopefully, I can achieve a few more running PRs in the coming months!<br />

I guess I will be a little cliche and join the masses of bloggers out there and write a post reflecting on "how far I've come" in 2010 and what I'm looking forward to in 2011. So let's see...what is there to note in my life from the beginning of the new decade?<br />
<ul><li>I spent my first full year in the working world (and haven't been fired)</li>
<li>I finally ditched my flip phone from 2006 (yes, it did have an antenna) and joined the present with a smart phone</li>
<li>I ran my first race (a 4 miler in Central Park in April) followed by three more including my first half marathon</li>
<li>Left the country twice (UK & Ireland in March; Bermuda in May)</li>
<li>Learned to love sushi</li>
<li>Saw Tom Petty and Crosby, Stills, and Nash in Saratoga, NY</li>
<li>Went to three Beer Festivals and two (official) pub crawls</li>
<li>Was completely surprised at my first surprise party</li>
<li>Had three different jobs over the course of the year (which will happen in 2011 as well now that I think about it)</li>
<li>Went skydiving (lived through it and didn't pee my pants before, during, or after)</li>
<li>Went camping and white water rafting for the first time</li>
<li>Joined a broomball and dodgeball league and managed not to injury myself too badly</li>
</ul><br />
<ul></ul><div>So what's in store for 2011?</div><div><ul><li>I will run the Boston Marathon (obviously but it had to be said)</li>
<li>I will run 500 miles (9 down as of today)</li>
<li>I will finished up my third and fourth rotation and graduate from my finance rotational program at work</li>
<li>I will find a full-time job and may have to move out-of-state to do so.</li>
<li>I will complete in my first triathlon. </li>
<li>I want to hike a mountain or go outdoor rock climbing or both</li>
<li>This is the most important one which seems to be an ongoing goal: I will cut the drama and bullshit out of my life. I don't have the time or energy for it anymore.</li>
</ul><div>I won't call these "resolutions." Most of these items have been on my list for awhile now and I don't like having one date to set goals. If you attach some kind of fake importance to a date chances are if you start to fail you just wait for the next artificially momentous date until you try again. If you want to do something, just go out and do it. No excuses or procrastination (this isn't college anymore people). So this is just a list of things I want to do soon to keep me focused on what's important to me. If I achieve them great, if not I'll keep trying until they're off my bucket list. Three days down, 362 to go. Bring it 2011!<br />

A time for a big greasy breakfast, opening gifts, time with family, oh yeah, and an 8 mile run. Now, the schedule is supposed to be a guide designed to allow you to move things things around if they conflict with your schedule. I decided to ignore this since I'm clearly a masochist and I knew I would be eating probably about an extra 1000 calories for the rest of the day. <br />
<br />
I fueled up with my favorite pre-run breakfast of french toast with bananas. Carbs and protein all covered in syrup. Is there anything better? I donned my new Nike thermal pullover that I got from my brother (that's the plus side of having a brother who's also run a marathon, he knows warm running clothes). My father snapped this pic right before I left although I ended up letting down Christmas fanatics everywhere and leaving the Santa hat behind for fear of overheating.<br />

The route I took was a short 3/4 mile to a running trail that borders the Tarrytown Lakes Reservoir (running near water is my favorite as I'm sure you'll see in the months to come). This trail is about a mile long and connects with the North County Trail which is about 20 miles long. I went out and back on the trail which is pretty flat. Unfortunately, my parents live in the Hudson River Valley which means that the roads are almost all hills so getting to and from the trail was a little more challenging and I could definitely feel pain creeping up my legs by the time I got back to my parents house, a clear recipe for a sore ass the next day.<br />

The run took me about an hour and 25 minutes which equated to around a 10 minute mile pace taking into account that I probably went a little farther than 8 miles. I made sure to keep at a conversational pace so I didn't overexert myself. Having not been able to entice anyone in the immediate area to run the full 8 miles with me (surprising I know), I had to monitor my pace by myself. I imagine if anyone had actually been out on the trail to see me, it would have been very entertaining to see me muttering nonsense to myself to make sure I could still say full sentences.<br />

I finished the run strong and feeling good but I think because I rushed to get ready for Christmas dinner at my grandparents' house and therefore did not eat or drink a while after after the run took it's toll on me. I ended up feeling really light headed and exhausted all through dinner. I finally recovered after rehydrating, eating, and taking a long nap under my new sheep blanket my Grandmother gave me for Christmas. Though maybe not an endorsed recovery method, I felt some tea and sugar cookies were the perfect panacea at the end of the night. Lesson learned though...make sure to eat and drink water within 30 minutes after a long run.<br />

What better way is there to lead into Christmas than with a little snow? Aside from the hour it took me to get home from work on Monday night, I love the snow. There's nothing better than that silent moment when you go outside and everything is completely white and still before angry Bostonians come out to shovel and ruin it.<br />
<br />
Since I was just starting to run last year, I only really ran inside on a treadmill, warm and out of the elements. Because I now run longer distances and the treadmill doesn't really simulate the rolling hills of a road race (and trust me I wouldn't want to experience a treadmill marathon anyway), I try to run outside as often as possible to build strength in my legs from running hills but mainly for my sanity to have some change in scenery. Sometimes that means running in the cold, rain, or in the case of Thursday morning, the snow. When I stepped out my front door at 7am, it was still flurrying and not many of my neighbors had shoveled the sidewalk in front of their houses yet. For the first 10 minutes or so of my run I had to deal with an occasional snowflake stinging my eyes, but the real challenge was that my normal running shoes, which I think are on their last leg anyway, don't get quite the same traction as they do on dry pavement...big surprise. I felt like I have to take one and a half steps for every step I would normally take to do the same distance.<br />

This was the sidewalk immediately outside of my front door and my struggling footprints in the snow. Luckily, when I got out to Beacon St., the main road, a greater proportion of the sidewalk was not only shoveled but also salted in some places. I'm not sure I would have made the full four miles if the entire route had been snow covered as it felt like I had to work twice as hard as I normally would. As the snow started to subside I even saw a few other runners and despite a slower minute/mile the run went pretty well. All in all I had a great morning: had a successful run, worked from home, got some Chipolte for lunch and then left for Christmas vacation in at my parents' house in New York...all sans pain and injury.Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14806814187414851095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5547777903989376963.post-13303390411324785252010-12-15T07:22:00.000-08:002010-12-15T07:22:22.070-08:00The Real Challenge: FundraisingAs I mentioned before, the Boston Athletic Association sets a fundraising minimum for charity runners because the race is so popular. While this is great for the charities as it ensures that they will raise a certain amount based on the total spots the BAA allocates to them, it can be overwhelming for the actual participants. <span style="font-weight: bold;">This year the fundraising minimum was set at $3,250.</span><br />
<br />
Initially I wasn't really too worried about raising this much money. The final deadline is May 18th, 2011, a full month after the marathon and five months from now. That's $650 per month or about $150 per week. Piece of cake! Then I reread my signed agreement...<br />

</div><div><b>January 31, 2011</b> at 5pm marks the recommitment deadline. Up until this point I can donate what I've raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and still walk away from the marathon and my fundraising minimum. After this date, I supply the balance of the minimum and am reimbursed as I raise the money. Now don't get me wrong, I'm happy to donate my time and money to LLS, BUT I'm not sure my credit card can quite afford one large $3000+ hit. So that leaves me with really focusing on fundraising. Having never raised this amount of money in my life I was a little worried. My parents raised me in the traditional "we don't talk about money let alone ask for it" way so it's a bit of a challenge for me to solicit donations, even if it is for a good cause. </div><div><br />
</div><div>Despite my reservations, I've come up with a few different fundraising event ideas and I'm sure many of you have already received emails from me. I'm happy to announce that I have blasted through my first goal of $500 in just my first week. To-date I've raised $840 which is 26% of the way to my goal!<br />

I'm not really one to get emotional or sappy but I have been really inspired and motivated by your words of encouragement and even more so by your stories of loved ones who have battled leukemia or lymphoma. Was that the starting gun? Yes it was ladies and gentlemen and it was signaling the start of training! Jillian, the Campaign Coordinator announced that even before we had run our first training run, the Massachusetts chapter had raised over $109K! Over 10% of the way to our $1 million goal! Along with that announcement, she recognized the top 6 fundraisers to date who had already raised from $2K to $18K. We also heard from two of our inspired heroes who were both cancer survivors, one of whom was first diagnosed at age 6 and proudly bragged about recently getting her learner's permit. By the end of all these's speeches, I was shocked, inspired, and a little tiny bit shamed into committing to stop procrastinating and get fundraising!</div><div><br /></div><div>Finally, our coaches, Kelly and Sarad came up to the stage to introduce themselves and get training started. Sarad really got to the heart of how we will probably all feel about our coaches by the end of training by leading off with, "Someone came up to Kelly earlier and asked if they could call her 'Mom.' So feel free to consider Kelly 'Mom' and me 'Dad.'" Already I'm thinking this is going to be a fun and interesting season and if my 18+ mile runs go the way I think they will, I may even end up calling them Mom, Dad, or whatever else is in my delusional mind at that point. Kelly and Sarad went over some basic training rules the most unfortunate of which is that we are not allowed to run with iPods. We're not allowed to listen to music during the marathon so we have to get use to running long distances without them now. Kelly and Sarad will be leading us on our metaphorical journey (well, I guess it's not really metaphorical if we will be traveling some fairly long distances, just always ending up where we started) for the next four months. Both my coaches seem very dedicated, inspirational, in shape, and, most importantly, like they know what they are doing. I'm feeling more and more confident that I might actually see the finish line and maybe even while still being able to stand! A few days after the clinic, I received an email from Sarad containing a recap of the clinic for those who couldn't make it and the thing I've been waiting for since I found out I made the team...OUR TRAINING SCHEDULE! <div><br /></div><div>I've included the whole schedule below but I decided to point out some of the highlights (and lowlights...)</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Dec 4:</b> 3 miles but more importantly, our Training Kick-off Party!</div><div><b>Dec 25: </b>8 miles on Christmas morning. At least I won't feel bad eating extra Christmas cookies.</div><div><b>Jan</b> <b>1:</b> 9 miles on New Years Day. Run off the champagne and hangover from the night before I guess...</div><div><b>Jan 8:</b> Our first double digit run!</div><div><b>Jan 29: </b>First<b> </b>half marathon distance.<br /><div><b>Feb 6: </b>Super Bowl Sunday and thankfully<i> just</i> a 4 mile Recovery run.</div><div><b>Mar 26: </b>Our longest single run of training, 20 miles. </div><div>We ran down a one mile path that goes alongside the Tarrytown Lakes Reservoir. The path is pretty much a flat run and can be extended up the North County Trail a further almost 20 miles. The run to get the path, on the other hand, is up and down a couple of fairly steep hills. It might have been my brother making jokes about runner's trots, but judging by how out of breath I was when we got to the top, I think I'm going to have to do a lot more hill work before I take on Heartbreak Hill at Mile 20 in April.</div><div><br />
</div><div>Even more important than my realization about the hills I'll have to face on the marathon course is that I'll be training in the dead of winter and it's going to be a hell of a lot colder than it was yesterday. So today being Black Friday I decided to stock up on some winter running gear. </div><div><br />
</div><div>Luckily, Team In Training had a clinic on choosing the right running shoes and gear lead by Colin Peddie, the founder and owner of Marathon Sports, a Boston-based running company, to make sure we knew how to equip ourselves. You should always dress for weather approximately 10 degrees warmer than the current temp to account for your rise in body temperature as your heart rate increases. I have a pair of capri pants but as I found out on my 4 miles run in 15 degree (9 with the wind chill) Minneapolis weather this past weekend, these won't carry me through my winter training schedule. I picked up a pair of Nike running tights as well as some loose-fitting dry-fit pants. Between the tights and the pants (layered together in the coldest weather) I should be fine in most types of winter weather. Having synthetic materials in key as cotton holds moisture which will make you cold even in mild weather. I also picked up an extra track pull-over but I'd still like to get a fleece vest and/or light windbreaker for colder and windier conditions. Also on my list are some ear warmers (so my hair still looks good in my pony-tail!) and some gloves. Luckily my mother helped me out with the stuff I bought today as a Christmas gift and Macy's was having some amazing sales otherwise all this running gear can get pretty expensive. </div><div>So what is Team In Training and what do I have to do to get myself to the starting line on April 18th? Team In Training is a branch of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society which started 1988 in Westchester County, NY when Bruce Cleland and 38 other runners raised over $300K to run the New York Marathon in honor of his daughter Georgia, a leukemia survivor. TNT has complete 16- to 20-month training programs for a variety of endurance programs such as triathlons, hikes, and of course, marathons. As part of the program, I'll have coaches, a mentor, group training runs, and various clinics to make sure I have the proper gear, nutrition, and injury prevention information to get me to the starting line and across the finish line with minimal lasting scars.</div><div><br />
</div><div>The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) sets a fundraising minimum for all charities since registration is limited and the marathon is so popular (regular registration filled up in 9 hours for 2011!). </div><div>The application process for the Boston Marathon opens tomorrow morning and is one of the toughest around. Just to be able to apply you have to have a qualifying time in another pre-approved marathon or half marathon that varies based on sex and age. For women in the 18-34 age group, the qualifying time is 3:40:00. As I'm not quite up to these standards and am short on time to train for and run another marathon, I've decided to make this goal have a dual purpose and run for charity.</div><div><br />

Six months ago I could barely run more than a few minutes at a time so how did I come up with this unbelievable goal to run 26.2 miles and why do I even think I'm capable of achieving it?<br />

Well I'm not sure I can fully answer the second question because I'm not sure yet that I can. I'm more hoping that telling people I'm doing this and asking them for donations to support me will make me so guilty I'll see my mother's disapproving face every time I push off a training session. Trust me that would move your ass too.<br />

Why did I pick this goal? And why is Boston so important? Any college student in Boston knows that Marathon Monday is the biggest drinking holiday of the year. Everyone looks forward to it every year whether you're in college or not. As a student at Boston University I was no different. I drank and cheered and was hungover by 2pm with the rest of them. The race holds a special place in my heart. But running it? Six months ago it seemed more likely that Rush Limbaugh would become a Democrat than that I would run a marathon. Then I started running...slowly...very slowly. About two weeks ago I ran my first race. It was a 4 miler in Central Park in NYC and the high was amazing. But the icing on the cake cake (or straw that broke the camels back) came on Monday, Marathon Monday 2010 to be exact, when I had to work instead of enjoying the festivities with my friends. I bitterly drove into work and saw school bus, after school bus, after school bus, carrying the runners out the the starting line in Hopkinton, MA. Coming down the straight stretch by the rest stop between exits 12 and 13, all I could see what a row of yellow down the middle lane. And then it hit me...I can do that. Drunkenly cheering didn't need to be my only contribution to the race. I should have my friends out there drunkenly cheering for me. The next day, I was at the airport and there were so many people walking around with their Adidas official Boston Marathon jacket that screamed "Yeah, that's right I'm pretty bad ass. I just ran one of the most challenging marathons in the world." I want that badge of honor. I think I'm strong enough and I should put it to the test.
